A new study has revealed that hiring people with high levels of patience creates better productivity in the workplace.
The research, conducted by Professors Felix Kölle and Thomas Lauer, looked into cooperative behaviour (as well as its underlying mechanisms) in a setting in which benefits from successful teamwork accrue only in the future.
According to the findings, businesses can positively influence collaboration and productivity by strategically placing employees with high levels of patience into long-term projects.

The researchers highlight that this is particularly relevant for team composition, as incorrectly assigning impatient workers to long-term projects could in fact undermine other colleagues’ efforts.
They recommend assessing an applicant’s level of patience during the hiring process.
Professor Kölle explained, “This can easily be implemented by incorporating relevant questions and tests in interviews. Our findings further suggest that recognising and appreciating individual differences in patience may be essential when assigning projects.”
