A new guide has been published to help support firms recruiting and retaining those who have criminal convictions.
Not only does this new guide provide support to businesses looking to hire or retain people who either have convictions or lived experience with the criminal justice system, but it highlights the benefits too.
According to new research, there are currently 12.3 million people in the UK who have a conviction. Just 17% of these people are hired within a year of being released, yet 86% of ex-offender employers rate them as being good at their jobs; they often have higher levels of loyalty and retention too.
The CIPD’s Guide to Recruiting, Employing and Retaining People with Convictions outlines the business benefits:
- Reduced recruitment costs
- Addresses skills and talent gaps
- Creates diverse workforces
- Enhances company brand and reputation
- Contribute to social responsibility

Sally Eley, Head of Trust at the CIPD, commented, “Around a quarter of working age people in the UK have a conviction. That’s a large number of individuals with vital skills, experience and knowledge who can make an important contribution to society.
“At the same time, many organisations are struggling to recruit the right people. The CIPD Trust is particularly passionate about supporting and mentoring people facing barriers – including those with a conviction – and we do this through utilising the unique knowledge and skillset of our people professionals.
“Our new guide will provide practical support to people professionals, leaders and organisations of any size, who are looking to challenge the status quo, transform their own hiring practices and champion real social change.”
