Many businesses across the country were happy to hear the PM’s latest announcement that the country is coming out of a national lockdown after the 2nd December.
There were some concerns that the UK would have to stay in lockdown for longer in the lead up to Christmas, however, the regional tiered system has been very much welcomed.
Responding to the announcement by Prime Minister Boris Johnson that England will return to a tiered system following the current lockdown, Neil Carberry, Chief Executive of the REC, said, “A return to localised measures will provide needed flexibility to businesses. With the holiday season approaching, this is an important time for firms to be able to open securely where possible.
“Many will remain under tough restrictions, however, and these businesses will need to know soon where they stand. They will also need support – not just with the rapid return testing the Prime Minister mentioned but also with enhanced financial support – including for Directors of limited companies.
“We hope the Chancellor will use Wednesday’s Spending Review to boost the economy into the new year by reducing employers National Insurance contributions to promote hiring and minimise redundancies. Funding Statutory Sick Pay for all would ensure that temporary workers and the employment businesses who supply them are able to continue to support businesses in their recovery.”

Email JaimeTania Bowers, Legal Counsel and Head of Public Policy at the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo) also commented, “We welcome the return to a regional tiered system that the Prime Minister has announced. It is APSCo’s view that we need to begin looking at restarting the UK economy and enforcing blanket-wide restrictions isn’t going to help businesses recover from what has already been an incredibly difficult year.
“While we await the full details of the tiered restrictions, we do also welcome the news that there will be a uniform set of rules for each tier. The lack of certainty that surrounded local lockdowns before national restrictions were put in place created a wealth of challenges for businesses unsure of what they could and couldn’t do across regional offices.”
“The community daily testing procedures are also good news for staffing companies keen to get recruiters back into the office. Our members have set up Covid-safe working procedures and the sooner they can get staff back to work, the quicker we will be able to move back towards economic recovery in some form.”
