As many as 295,250 people decided to get their self-assessment tax return filed early this year and completed it within the first week of the new tax year.
Almost 70,000 people did this on the first day of the new tax year (6th April 2024), indicating that there are a lot of people who want to take advantage of the many benefits that come with getting a tax return filed early.
These benefits include finding out how much you owe early on, giving you more time to save for the deadline date (31st January 2025) if you need to, and if you’re due a refund you’ll receive it sooner.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, said, “Filing your Self Assessment early means people can spend more time growing their business and doing the things they love, rather than worrying about their tax return.
“You too can join the thousands of customers who have already done their tax return for the 2023-24 tax year by searching ‘Self Assessment’ on GOV.UK and get started today.”
