What qualifications and skills do I need to become a freelance exam marker?
As you can imagine, you will need to have certain qualifications and experience to be eligible to become an exam marker.
For example, you’ll need to:
- Have a teaching qualification, be educated at a first-degree level or the equivalent qualification in a related subject
- Have at least 2-3 years of relevant teaching or marking experience
- Usually have a senior professional referee who is able to confirm your experience
The type of skills you’ll need to have include:
- Being organised and having good time management – as you’ll only have a certain amount of time to complete papers
- Accuracy – while you will need to work through exam papers relatively quickly, you’ll also need to ensure that you are as accurate as possible, especially considering the fact that these exams could impact a student’s future.
- Being computer literate
As mentioned previously, this is the type of role usually taken on as a way of earning additional money, as opposed to being a full-time occupation.
It’s typically chosen by teachers who are looking to not only supplement their income, but to enhance their personal development or to even gain a greater understanding of the exams their students take in order to help them further.
It’s a role often taken on by retired teachers too.
Benefits of being a freelance exam marker
For many people, the financial benefits are top of their list when it comes to joining the self-employed sector.
For example, often a freelancer is able to charge more than their permanent counterparts, plus there’s the fact that you’ll be able to claim back on expenses, so costs such as office supplies, travel, computer software – anything needed for you to complete your work – can all be claimed back and used to reduce your tax bill.

Other benefits of freelancing include being able to enhance and develop your skills and experience, as well as having increased freedom and flexibility to make that work/life balance even better.
