A new survey has highlighted issues within the UK’s hiring system, which is costing the country in productivity levels.

Potential business growth is said to be at risk with inefficient hiring resulting in delayed decisions and lost talent.

Inefficient hiring system

According to the latest findings from Totaljobs, recruiters spend an average of 17.7 hours per vacancy on manual admin tasks.

This is the equivalent of more than two working days per hire, or 8450 hours a year across typical workloads.

This equates to approximately £17,000 in annual costs per recruiter in lost productivity (based on average salaries).

The admin tasks cited as routinely slowing recruiters down include:

  • Reviewing applications – 3.6 hours per vacancy
  • Scheduling interviews – 2.5 hours per vacancy
  • Processing post-interview notes – 3 hours per vacancy

When recruiters were asked the top reasons for recruitment being slowed down:

  • 72% said screening a high volume of irrelevant applications
  • 71% said waiting for feedback from stakeholders
  • 61% said performing manual tasks, such as data entry

Companies are losing out on talent

This inefficient hiring system is also costing businesses talent.

Over a quarter of jobseekers say they haven’t continued with a potential role due to delays, unclear communication or too many interview rounds.

The report found that jobseekers would prefer a process that was shorter (cited by 30%), had faster feedback (34%) and included better transparency about the requirements of a role (39%).

AI could be the answer

As many as 77% of recruiters believe that AI could help to improve hiring efficiency.

In fact, a quarter of recruiters are already using AI to address tasks, such as CV screening and interview scheduling.

However, the report also discovered several barriers, including:

  • Being unfamiliar with AI tools (cited by 37% of recruiters)
  • Concerns that AI won’t make fair decisions (24%)
  • Not having adequate tech systems that support AI (23%)
