The Christmas period is a time when most are spending the days that they have off to relax, eat and spend time with friends and family, however, according to latest statistics, thousands chose to file their tax return too!
HMRC revealed that there were more than 16,000 doing this over Christmas, perhaps because this was the only time people had to work on their self-assessment.
Data shows that there were 6,033 taxpayers submitting their tax return on Christmas Eve, 2,590 on Christmas Day itself and then 7,655 on Boxing Day.
These figures were released as HMRC launched its new campaign to remind the UK’s 11.4 million self-assessment customers not to ignore that ‘niggling’ feeling to complete their tax return in time for the 31st January deadline.

Angela MacDonald, HMRC Director-General for Customer Services, commented on the findings, “It’s easy to put off doing your self-assessment, but that tax ‘niggle’ means it’s always on our customers’ minds.”
She added, “With the 31st January deadline edging closer we want to help remind our customers to get it done so they can alleviate that feeling, ensuring they can relax and not have to worry about doing their tax return.”
