A new survey has revealed that most parents rely on their employer to provide workplace flexibility.
If parents cannot access greater flexibility in their roles, this puts businesses at risk of losing valuable talent.
A third of parents change jobs to find the flexibility they need
In the Work.Life survey, as many as 37% of working parents said they had to change their job to find a company with better flexibility options.
Another 30% admitted to having to reduce their working hours because of childcare costs.
When asked their top priorities for choosing a job as a parent, the results show:
- Flexible hours (cited by 48%)
- Salary (47%)
- Remote working (35%)
- Subsidised childcare (21%)
- Job security (15%)
- On-site childcare (14%)
- Increased parental leave (13%)

Employers have a real opportunity to make a difference by offering flexibility and practical support
Commenting on the findings, Olya Yakzhina, head of people at Work.Life, said, “Our findings show that, despite recent changes, childcare costs are still causing parents significant financial pressures and stress.
“Working as a parent is difficult, and flexibility is something they rely on to be able to be parents. Employers have a real opportunity to make a difference by offering flexibility and practical support.
“Creating environments that work for parents is essential, because this unlocks further talent for roles, as well as retains current people employers have invested so much in.”
