With just under four weeks until the self-assessment deadline, HMRC has revealed that as many as 40,000 filed theirs over the festive period.
Perhaps in a bid to avoid the festive chores, more than 4,400 people chose to file their tax returns online on Christmas Day!
HMRC’s festive filing statistics show that over Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day:
- The most popular time to file on Christmas Day was between 15:00 and 15:59, with 368 filing theirs.
- 11,932 people submitted their tax returns on Boxing Day.
- The most popular time for filing on Boxing Day was 16:00-16:59, with 1,108 people doing so at this hour.
- 23,731 people filed on Christmas Eve. The most popular time was 11:00 to 11:59, with 3,458 filing theirs.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, said, “People who need to file a Self Assessment return and already have can enjoy the rest of the festive period knowing they’ve got it wrapped up for another year.
“For those who haven’t started yet, our online service is available 365 days a year so there’s still a chance to get it done before 2024 is out! Go to GOV.UK and search ‘Self Assessment’ to access the online help and start today.”
