Those who need to file for self-assessment are being warned to remain vigilant, as nearly 5,000 scams have been reported this year.
This is the perfect time of year for scammers, as many people will be looking to file and pay any tax owed on their tax return before the 31st January deadline date.
More than 135,500 suspected scams reported
After receiving more than 135,500 reports of suspected scams over the last 10 months, HMRC is urging people to stay alert ahead of the self-assessment deadline.
The tax body has also revealed that more than 4,800 self-assessment scams have been reported since February 2025.
Scammers will send fake tax demands or attempt to pressure people to hand over personal information and use persuasive and threatening tactics to target people during periods when they are more likely to receive correspondence from HMRC.

What to do if you’re suspicious of an HMRC scam
Over the last 10 months, HMRC has closed down nearly 25,000 fake websites and phone numbers, so if you receive suspicious communication from HMRC, then you can:
- Forward emails to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk
- SMS messages to 60599
- Report phone calls on GOV.UK
The tax body advises that they will never:
- leave voicemails threatening legal action or arrest
- ask for personal or financial information via text message or email
- contact customers by email, text, or phone to inform them about a refund or ask them to claim one.
