London-based firms are being urged to have suitable fire risk assessments and staff training in place after the London Fire Brigade’s (LFB) recent announcement.
From October 2024, the LFB will no longer respond to daytime activations (between 7am and 8:30pm) of automatic fire alarms in most non-residential buildings.
This is a direct result of the LFB attending as many as 52,000 false calls generated by automatic fire alarms in the year to March 2024.
Businesses based in London are being advised to update their fire risk assessments and staff training, emphasising particularly on what employees must do in the event of a fire alarm sounding during both response and non-response hours.

Firms should also ensure that staff understand they will need to call 999 in the event of a fire during the non-response hours, as well as check that their fire alarm system is regularly maintained by a qualified person.
Dougie Barnett, Director of Customer Risk Management at AXA Commercial, commented, “This will be a significant change for London businesses that will impact their fire risk assessments. It’s important they prepare now and put plans in place so employees have the required training and knowledge before it comes into force.”
