Tax advisers have until the 18th of August 2026 to register with HMRC under new mandatory requirements.
Rolling out in stages between 18th May 2026 and 31st March 2027, these new rules are to create better standards within the tax advice market, as well as protect taxpayers.
What is the Modernising and Mandating Tax Adviser Registration?
Modernising and Mandating Tax Adviser Registration (MMTAR) is a single, streamlined digital registration system that is replacing a range of previous processes, making it easier for tax advisers to interact with HMRC.
How Do I Know if I Need to Register for MMTAR?
If you interact with HMRC on behalf of someone else about their tax affairs and get paid for it, you are seen as a tax adviser and will need to register.

It is the legal entity that interacts with HMRC that must register – individual employees will not need to register separately, but checks will need to be carried out on certain people within a business.
It’s free to register, with step-by-step guidance and an interactive checker tool available on GOV.UK
MMTAR to Create a Fairer, More Transparent Tax Advice Market
Robert Jones, HMRC’s Director of Intermediaries, said, “These new requirements will help create a fairer, more transparent tax advice market, support those advisers who meet high standards, and give taxpayers greater confidence in the advice they receive.
“Tax advisers who have not yet registered should act now and check the guidance on GOV.UK.”
