Those who still need to file their self-assessment tax return have until the 28th of February to do so in order to avoid a late filing penalty.
Ordinarily, the deadline date for submitting tax returns is the 31st of January, however, with the current circumstances and many people struggling financially, HMRC decided to give extra time to complete their 2020/21 return.
Self-assessment taxpayers will then have until the 1st of April to pay their outstanding tax bill, or set up a Time to Pay arrangement to avoid a late payment penalty. It’s worth noting that interest has been applied to outstanding balances since the 1st of February.
