New research has found that the majority of employees who currently work in a hybrid way say it has had a positive effect on their mental, physical, social and financial wellbeing.

This has left many people fearing a return-to-office (RTO) situation.

Hybrid Working vs Return-to-Office

According to Hays research, 38% of workers say that recent news stories of employers asking staff to return to the office regularly have harmed their wellbeing.

This has been coined the ‘RTO scaries’, with the main worry around returning to the office being the added cost of doing so.

Almost three-quarters (72%) of workers aged between 20 and 29 say they are put off returning to the office due to the financial pressure, versus less than half (48%) of staff over the age of 50.

Hybrid Working Helps Staff to Better Manage Their Workloads

Commenting on the findings, Hannah Pearsall, Head of Wellbeing at Hays, said, “Hybrid working gives people the autonomy to manage their workload in the best way that suits their individual needs.

“For instance, some people require quiet space at home to concentrate on certain projects, whilst other tasks might be more effectively carried out face-to-face in a collaborative setting.

“Employers must ensure they are mindful that implementing return-to-office mandates will worry different people for different reasons. Ultimately, a lack of awareness around the impact of RTO on wellbeing, particularly financial wellbeing, could be catastrophic for the sustained success of their business.”
