With so many people now taking on a side hustle to earn extra money, HMRC has launched a new campaign providing much-needed advice on tax obligations.
At the end of 2024, there was some confusion around the new side hustle tax rules that came into force on the 1st of January 2025 with many people unsure of whether or not they were affected by them.

Now, HMRC has launched a ‘Help for Hustle’ campaign to support people who are earning extra income and help them understand any tax obligations they may have

The new guide covers five key areas:
- I’m buying or making things to sell
- I’ve got a side gig
- I work for myself doing multiple jobs
- I’m a content creator or influencer
- I rent out my property
Angela MacDonald, HMRC’s Second Permanent Secretary and Deputy Chief Executive Officer, said, “We know many people are turning their hobbies and interests into successful businesses and we’re here to help them understand their tax obligations.
“Nobody wants an unexpected tax bill, so anyone with a side hustle should check HMRC’s straightforward guide and make sure they’re getting their tax right.”
