A new survey has highlighted the benefits that neurodivergent workers can offer organisations.
However, this can only be achieved if more businesses take the right steps to make their workplace more inclusive.
This is according to new research by the Association for Project Management (APM).
Neurodivergent workers can drive business success
APM’s recently published ‘Promoting Neurodiversity’ report has revealed that those with neurodevelopmental conditions, such as ADHD, dyslexia and autism spectrum disorder, can help to drive business success.
This is due to many neurodivergent people being able to offer unique insights and talents to certain projects and organisations.
This includes things like:
- astute pattern recognition
- better risk management
- adaptability
There is, however, evidence that these individuals require additional support in the workplace.

Many neurodivergent workers don’t have the support they need
The report shows that many neurodivergent individuals encounter barriers within certain employment settings.
This could be feeling uncomfortable in a busy office environment due to sensory overload, or having difficulty with long periods of concentration.
APM have advised businesses to better support neurodivergent staff by:
- Providing and promoting neurodiversity awareness and training
- Enhancing disclosure processes
- Implementing reasonable adjustments and flexible policies
- Reassessing recruitment and training practices
- Creating supportive networks
- Redesigning workspaces and meeting environments
- Focusing on strength-based task assignment
