New research shows that the most sought-after specialist skill by tech employers today is Artificial Intelligence.
This will come as no surprise considering that more and more businesses are choosing to spend their time and money investing in AI.
AI in the workplace growing
While there is still an ongoing importance being placed on soft skills, as many as 39% of employers are specifically searching for professionals with expertise in AI.
Other in-demand skills include:
- Transformation, projects and change (cited by 37% of employers)
- Architecture (36%)
- Cloud (31%)
- Data and advanced analytics (30%)

The Hays research revealed that as many as 73% of employers said they are confident that AI will positively impact their organisations over the next year.
Over half (56%) said they were currently investing in AI, which is a 21% rise compared to this time last year.
Businesses looking to contractors with AI skills
The report also found that nearly half (47%) of employers are planning to hire contractors to source the AI skills they need – this is up from 43% in 2025.
As many as 81% of contractors said they are looking to upskill in AI, rising from 75% who said the same last year.
