BA and Marriott fines show the risks of being GDPR non-compliant

(2 minutes to read)

Alex Fraser, Director from Engage: “While this is the first major fine of 2019, the sheer scale of it should certainly serve as a warning to business owners.”

In light of the fines handed out to the Marriott hotel chain and British Airways, recruiters and end hirers have been urged to ensure their suppliers provide comprehensive security information when considering personal data outsourcing.

Engage Technology Partners, a technology platform that manages the recruitment supply chain, are warning that these major fines demonstrate the risks of being caught out in GDPR non-compliance.

With the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) announcing this week that the two high profile businesses will be handed fines totalling nearly £300 million for failing to protect consumer data, Engage has highlighted that the risks for businesses will only increase.

While there is no question that these organisations will have had a full understanding of the GDPR, the ICO maintains that they had insufficient security practices which consequently led to a major data breach.

Alex Fraser, Director of Engage commented, “While this is the first major fine of 2019, the sheer scale of it should certainly serve as a warning to business owners. If two firms with a raft of tech support behind them have been caught out, there can be no doubt that smaller businesses are also exposed to potential risks.”

“Engage has put in place the extensive security procedures necessary to meet the requirements of some of the high streets biggest employers and we can offer peace of mind to our clients of all sizes. We encourage clients to ask suppliers about security considerations in coding standards, proactive monitoring and as part of staff training. There are a number of tools now available to audit and report on security standards that help identify potential weaknesses and verify that standards are being met.”

With over 25 years experience in the contracting marketing, Dolan Accountancy has the heritage, reputation and credibility you can trust. Working closely with our sister company, ContractorUmbrella, it means we can offer one low cost, fixed fee package at £95 + VAT per month. This gives you the flexibility of using both our Limited Company Accountancy Services and our award winning Umbrella Service, for one inclusive cost. We don’t believe in tiered packages or hidden extra fees, instead we aim to give you everything you need, including:

  • Free use of ContractorUmbrella – With changes in Public Sector IR35 Legislation we understand that sometimes you are required to contract via an umbrella company. We will keep your limited company ticking over, while you work margin free via our sister company, ContractorUmbrella.
  • A Dedicated Accountant – Your accountant will be there for any company or personal tax advice that you require. We will never outsource work, even to internal teams.
  • Free Access to FreeAgent – The founder behind the multi award winning FreeAgent platform was one of Simon’s first clients, therefore it only seems fitting that we offer all of our clients access to FreeAgent, free of charge.
